For the last decade or so I have seen my fair share of pitches. In the last 2 years, the start-up game has really ramped up from everyone wanting to live their Shark Tank dream to wanting to become the new Facebook. I get as many as 10+ pitches a week, and some are good, a few are OK but most are really bad. After talking to some other angels I came up with a quick list of what to do and what not to do based on the feedback I received.

When seeking a mentor to follow or leaders for your team you may want to throw everything else out the window when it comes to conventional evaluation and stick to one simple rule. Do they have a track record of making great decisions throughout their entire life? So much of life is critical thinking and decision making. You probably know a few “smart” people that always do, not so smart things. You may know some heavily educated people that constantly make poor decisions and give even worse advice. All BS aside one thing seems to stay true. Those that have a track record of poor decision making usually don’t change course. They are who they are. Trends usually don’t change for these situations. The next time you’re evaluating someone, really dig into how they rationalize things and make decisions before you jump in.
